1〜ても〜なくてもwhether...or not 雨でも雨じゃなくても、明日そこに行きましょう。
Whether rain or not, let's go there tomorrow.
2前者は〜、後者は〜。the former...and the latter...日本の代表的な伝統芸能に能と狂言がある。前者は悲劇で後者は喜劇だ。
Noh and Kyogen are two of Japan's most representative traditional performing arts. The former is a tragedy and the latter a comedy.
3〜といったnounlike..such as..レタスやブロッコリーといった野菜を毎日食べている。
We eat vegetables like lettuce and broccoli every day.
4一方(で) / Sentence一方(で)on the other hand, while日本の夏は非常に蒸し暑い、その一方で冬はかなり寒い地域もある。Summer in Japan is hot and humid, however, there are some areas in Japan that are extremely cold in winter.
5あるいはor, either面接は日本語あるいは英語で行われます。
Interviews are conducted in Japanese or English.
6なかなか〜ないnot easily, to refuse to, not readily.. なかなかバスが来ないよ。
The bus is not coming yet!
不況がなかなか終わらない。
The economical recession is not over yet.
7つまりin other words, namely, it means.. 私が生まれたところは日本の首都、つまり東京です。
The place I was born is the capital of Japan, namely Tokyo.
8そこでbecause of that, therefore この仕事は一人では出来ない。そこでみんなに協力してもらうことにした。I cannot complete this work alone. So I decided to ask everyone to help me.
9〜以外(のnoun/に)except, other than, besides 彼は英語以外の外国語は出来ない。
He can't speak any foreign language except English.
10決して〜ないnever, by no means決してこの中に入っては行けません。
Do not enter here by no means.
11Sentenceという理由でBecause.. , For the reason that.., Just because..時間がないという理由で、寝る時間を惜しむのはよくない。
It's not a good thing not to sleep properly just because you don't have time.
12〜らplural marker, such asこれら、それら、あれら、彼らこれらの漢字を来週までに覚えてくるように。
You should learn these kanji by next week.
13〜に対してin contract, whereas 日本語は発音が簡単なのに対して中国語は発音が難しい。It is easy to pronounce in Japanese, whereas it is difficult in Chinese.
14〜限りas long as, as far as私が知っている限り、田中さんは今日も来ないよ。
As far as I know, Mr.Tanaka won't be coming today again.
15〜にも関わらずin spite of, despite大雪にも関わらず子供達は登校した。
Despite the heavy snow, the children went to school.
16せっかくwith effort, at great pain, to go through the trouble to do soせっかく遠くまでいらっしゃったのですからもっとゆっくりしてください。
Since you have come here all this far, please stay and relax more.
17〜(と/って)言ってもalthough, even though 二月だと言っても十月のように暖かい日が続いている。
Although it is February, we have warm days like October's.
18思うように〜ないnot as one expectsクラスメートの前では思うように日本語が上手く話せない。
In front of my classmates, I can't speak Japanese as well as I want.
